In Australia, the Queensland Liberal National Party took a vote to lobby to “remove climate change propaganda from schools” (LINK here).
Apparently, Queensland’s Liberal National Party suffers the same arrogance that the Republican Party suffers in the United States of America in believing they know more than scientists and that climate change is (a) in question (b) easily manageable or (c) nonexistent.
After reading the above article, I was stunned. I was looking to Australia for inspiration, lacking sufficient quantities here at home in the United States. Then I realized, “Hey! Wait a minute! Australia, too, has some of
the best science institutions in the world! Australia has some of the highest ranked institutions of higher learning and research anywhere around! I wonder what they say? I wonder if they are similar to the best research and learning institutions in the United States of America?”
Son-of-a-gun! Wouldn’t you know it? If you go down the list of Australia’s top-ranked science schools…one after the other…100% of them see climate change is a serious problem that needs to be addressed quickly. Oddly enough, they ALL also agree 100% with the best schools in the United States. How can this possibly be? Is it because Australians want so much to be like Americans? (Tongue in cheek, I’m KIDDING, Australia). I think it is the other way around. Because quite clearly, Australia is setting a better policy example than the United States and I deeply admired everything I saw in Australia until I witnessed the splendor of the Queensland LNP’s lunacy.
What say you, Queensland LNP? Shall we “infect” your schools with the teachings of all your best universities and scientists? Are you prepared to tell the world that Australia’s best scientists are crappy at what they do? Because that is basically precisely what you just said, LNP. You just said your best scientists do not know what they are talking about and that you know more than they do. Fortunately, the rest of the world is not listening to the Queensland LNP. The rest of the world is moving on.
So, without further adeiu I proudly give you (drum roll, please…) - WHAT THE BEST UNIVERSITIES IN AUSTRALIA SAY ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE – SOME OF THE BEST SCIENTISTS AND TOP-RANKED UNIVERSITIES IN THE WORLD:
The University of Melbourne Says…. (LINK)
David Karoly of University of Melbourne…(LINK). “Neither party has policies which will provide a fair and equitable reduction in Australians emissions relative to the rest of the world.”
The Australian National University Says…(LINK)
Will Steffen of the Australian National University Says (LINK)
The University of Sydney Says…(LINK)
The University of Queensland Says…(LINK) Say it isn’t so! UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND. Did you not consult with the Queensland LNP before forming your curriculum?
Ove Hoegh-Guldberg of University of Queensland Says (LINK)
The University of New South Wales Says…(LINK)
New South Wales’ Matthew England…(LINK)
The University of Western Australia Says…(LINK)
Paul Hardisty of University of Western Australia Says (LINK)
So there you have it, Queensland LNP. This consensus among Australia’s scientists is most disturbing as it departs drastically from big business politics and clearly that is a no no. Going green might hurt profits. It is a good thing that politicians are here to save us from our best scientists. For the record, though, I would quite happily send either of my daughters “across the pond” to study science at ANY of your best universities if I could afford it. Guess I wish you admired your own scientists as much as I do. Pity, Queensland LNP. So much for national pride.
